Unplug the disposer and use something to get down inside to see if you can get the item out that is blocking the disposal from spinning.

If the garbage disposal won t turn on but the motor makes a humming sound when you flip the switch it indicates that the inner flywheel is jammed.
Make sure the disposal is not jammed.
The humming sound can be a sign that the motor is clogged or jammed resulting in its failure to grind.
Usually this causes the appliance s reset button to pop or the circuit breaker to trip very quickly.
This is not a situation you want to continue for very long as it can burn out the disposer s.
If your garbage disposal is still humming after you ve unjammed it or manually rotated the grinding plate there s a good chance the disposer will need to be reset.
If the garbage disposal will not budge using the wrenchette then something large is in the disposal that will not let it turn.
Turn on the water at the sink.
To do this simply find the reset button and push it in.
Reset the disposer if your garbage disposal is humming but not turning.
If it does not stay in the disposal turn off the water and wait 10 minutes for the disposal motor to cool.
When that happens it will appear that the garbage disposal motor has burned out even though that may not be the case.
